How to get FedEx API credentials and connect to RateTell

FedEx Credentials

Get API credentials from FedEx to display live FedEx shipping rates in your checkout.

Important: June 1, 2026 Deadline. FedEx is retiring its legacy SOAP-based Web Services on June 1, 2026. After this date, only the modern REST APIs (documented below) will be available. The setup process described here is for the REST APIs — follow these steps to generate your credentials.

What You Need

Step-by-Step Setup

1. Access Developer Portal

  1. Visit FedEx Developer Resource Center
  2. Click "Sign Up" (or "Log In" if you have account)
  3. Use your FedEx account credentials
  4. Complete any additional verification steps

2. Create a Project

  1. Click "Create a Project"
  2. Enter project details:
    • Project Name: "RateTell Integration"
    • Description: "Live shipping rates for checkout"
  3. Click "Next"

3. Select APIs

  1. Choose "Rates and Transit Times" API
  2. Optionally add "Address Validation"
  3. Review API documentation (optional)
  4. Click "Create"

4. Get Your Credentials

After creating your project, you'll receive:

  • Client ID (API Key)
  • Client Secret (API Password)

Account Number: Your 9-digit FedEx shipping account number. Find it on your FedEx invoice or in your online account profile under "Account Management". This is separate from your Client ID.

5. Add to RateTell

  1. Log into RateTell dashboard
  2. Go to Carriers in the sidebar
  3. Click "Connect" on the FedEx card
  4. Enter credentials:
    • Client ID: From developer portal
    • Client Secret: From developer portal
    • Account Number: Your 9-digit FedEx account number
  5. Enter Origin Address:
    • Your warehouse/shipping address
    • Must include valid postal code
  6. Click "Test Connection"
  7. If successful, click "Save"

Testing Your Setup

Test vs Production Credentials

FedEx provides two separate sets of credentials — one for testing and one for live rates.

EnvironmentCredentials
TestTest Client ID & Test Client Secret
ProductionProduction Client ID & Production Client Secret

How to get each:

  • Test credentials are available immediately after creating a project in the FedEx Developer Portal.
  • Production credentials require you to move your project to production (request go-live approval). Once approved, production keys are generated and shown once — save them securely.

In RateTell:

  • For testing, enter your Test Client ID and Test Client Secret and enable Test Mode.
  • For live rates, replace with your Production credentials and switch to Production Mode.

Verify Connection

Click "Test Connection" to confirm your credentials work before going live.

Troubleshooting

Authentication Failed: Copy Client ID and Secret exactly (case-sensitive). Ensure project status is "Active" in developer portal.

No Rates Returned: Verify account number is correct and origin address has valid postal code.

Test Mode Not Working: Make sure you are using your test credentials (not production credentials) while Test Mode is enabled.

Negotiated Rates

If you have special pricing with FedEx, enable "Use Negotiated Rates" in carrier settings and enter your Special Pricing Agreement Number.
