What Is an HS Code?

An HS code (Harmonized System code) is a standardized numerical classification used by customs authorities worldwide to identify traded products. Every product shipped internationally is assigned an HS code, which determines the duty rate, tax treatment, and any import restrictions that apply to it. The system is maintained by the World Customs Organization and used by over 200 countries.

HS codes are typically 6 digits at the international level (HS6), with individual countries extending them to 8 or 10 digits for more specific local classification — for example, the US uses a 10-digit HTS (Harmonized Tariff Schedule) code that starts with the same 6-digit HS base.

HS Code vs. HTS Code — What's the Difference?

The HS code is the internationally standardized 6-digit base classification, recognized globally. The HTS code is the US-specific extension of the HS code to 10 digits, used specifically for imports into the United States. Other countries have their own extended versions (e.g., the EU's Combined Nomenclature, or CN, codes). If you're shipping to the US, you'll need the full 10-digit HTS code; for most other destinations, the 6-digit HS code combined with the destination country's schedule is sufficient.
